SVE Newsletter -- September 2001 SVEPOA General Board Meeting Saturday, October 27, 2001 9:30 AM Riverside Park You won't want to miss this year's Annual Meeting. Why? Have you met SVEPOA's first new President in more than ¼ of a century? Do you want to have a say in the future development of SVE and how SVE spends its resources? Want to know what’s going on? Want to pick who represents you on the Board? We have more people running for positions than we have seats available. This year's meeting will begin at Riverside Park at 9:30 AM. Why? (See article on Riverside Park) After the ceremony at Riverside Park, we will convene at Northwoods Lodge in SVE. We will have a telephone hook-up to a site in the Detroit area. (Contact Allen to volunteer to be the hosting site.) The focus of the meeting will be on long-range planning. What do you want to see in SVE's future? New Logo and Sign Check out our new logo in the top left hand corner of this newsletter. The SVE logo remained unchanged for the past 30 years. It was time for a facelift. Bill and Karen Law headed up an effort to develop a new design and sign for the SVE entranceway. It’s a fresh, new look. The logo has a blue background. In the foreground you’ll see water reflecting Cedar River. The mountains at the top are symbolic of Schuss Mountain. You’ll find the traditional SVE letters on the mountain. We believe the sign that appears at the entrance to SVE sends an important message to visitors. The new sign will provide a great first impression. It should be installed in the Spring. The logo will replace the existing logo you see at the top of the newsletter and on our stationery. Thank you ,Karen and Bill, for a great job. Election of New OfficersAs we go to press, the following nominees have been proposed for the SVEPOA Board: + Howard Benford + Doug Galbraith + Wayne Koppe + Judy Ofiara + Al Leach + Lonne Petroskey + Heidi Manning Please attend the annual meeting so you can meet the candidates or run yourself. If you can't attend, please vote using the ballot mailed to all paid-up members. (Voting is a privilege of paid-up membership.)Meet The Neighbors In this issue, we want you to meet our President and his family. The Garver-Wolfs have owned Northwoods Lodge since 1983. They bought it from Schuss Mountain and ran it for a few years as a youth hostel. Maggie (and Skjel) Johannsen worked as the managers. Some of you remember them, they lived in what is now known as the Larkin residence. The Northwoods Lodge has had an interesting history. It was originally built to be the SVE Clubhouse. That's a whole 'nother story. Well, the Garver-Wolfs were not very successful running Northwoods Lodge as a business, so they tried to sell it. Unfortunately, they picked the wrong buyer and things didn't work out very well. Eventually they repossessed the place. A few years ago they bought the three lots behind their property. Hey, this was supposed to be about the people, not the property. Yeah, but the property is probably more interesting than the people. Let's get back to our story. The Garver-Wolf family consists of Mandy Garver and Allen Wolf and their two kids, Rivka Garver and Daniel Wolf. What's with all the different last names? They do that just to confuse people. They really are married and both kids belong to both of them. They bought Northwoods Lodge the same year Rivka was born – 1983. Daniel joined the family in 1986. Allen and Mandy both work for Ford Motor Company in Dearborn in Human Resources. They have both been there for 24 years and enjoy their work. Rivka just started at the University of Michigan. She isn't sure what she wants to study, so she is taking it easy with English, Spanish and Hebrew this semester. Daniel just started at Andover High School in Bloomfield Hills. He enjoys skateboarding and basketball (both on the SVE basketball court). Daniel also plays violin and guitar. Both Daniel and Rivka are vegetarians, although their parents are not. Rivka enjoys spending time with her friends and listening to music, as does Daniel. The Garver-Wolfs are Jewish. That means they keep kosher. Keeping kosher is a set of dietary requirements which requires meat be slaughtered a certain way and only animals with split hoofs and chew their cud are allowed. Only fish with spines are permitted and dairy products can never be mixed with meat in the same meal. The Jewish Sabbath is on Saturday. When they are not in SVE on a weekend, they will typically be found in synagogue where Mandy does a lot of volunteer work. Allen has been on the SVEPOA Board for about 8 years and was recently elected president. Besides work, being president and maintaining his home and Northwoods Lodge, Allen doesn't have much time for other recreation. In his spare time, he and a friend run an internet business called Petpainters.com. They arrange for oil paintings of pets from photographs for pet owners. Mandy enjoys playing guitar, reading and exercising. Stop by and say hi. Their SVE number is 231 587-4762.
Property Transfers Lot 59 was acquired by Robert and Gale Davis of White Cloud in June 2000 (just recorded). Lots 3 and 4 (along Cedar River) were sold by the Michigan Trade Exchange to Tim Stone for $47,000. Lot 117 is also in the process of being sold by the Schlichts. Lot 52 (and home) was purchased by Kurt and Kelley Shoecraft from William Apfel on August 14. Lot 89 was transferred by Martin and Virginia Rubingh to Robert and Georgia Durga on August 10. The Ruginghs acquired Lot 199 from Marvin and Jane Rubingh on August 21. Riverside Park Riverside Park is being officially rededicated on October 27, 2001 as the George Johnson Riverside Park in honor of our immediate past president, who served for more than 25 years. Riverside Park is one of the jewels of SVE. The park includes the basketball and former shuffleboard courts and Cedar River. Over the years the Association has maintained the park and added improvements such as the basketball hoop and park benches. The basketball court was originally a tennis court. However, it was determined that the facility would more appropriately be used for basketball and has seen a fair amount of use since its conversion. Cedar River is famous for its rainbow trout and many anglers can be seen in and about its waters. The renaming of the Park is a fitting tribute to a man who devoted so much energy to SVE. George, almost single-handedly, kept the SVEPOA going during some very tough times. He was the one who convinced everyone that the SVE roads could be paved and lead us through the process. Most of the progress made in SVE must be attributed to George's hard work and leadership. Riverside Park Volunteers Needed Heidi Manning is chairing a committee developing new plans for the George Johnson Riverside Park. The plans will includes stairs and a wooden walkway to make more of the park accessible to more people. Heidi's committee will work during the winter to develop the plans which will be implemented in the Spring. Please contact Heidi to volunteer for the committee either as a planner or as a doer! Heidi can be reached at: josco34@torchlake.com. Properties for Sale Any property owner in good standing may list their property for sale in the newsletter. The first listing is one we place with great reluctance. Karen and Bill Law are selling their lovely SVE home and moving about 12 miles west of Traverse City. Bill is Vice President of SVEPOA and Karen heads our beautification and welcoming committees. They have listed their home at $169,000. This house is not likely to be on the market long. If you've seen it, you know what we mean. Karen and Bill also own Lot #205. That lot is listed at $5800. Dr. Ken Shmarak is selling his lot-- #66. His asking price is also $5800. Do You Like Money? How would you like to count ours? We are desperately in need of a Treasurer. Wayne Koppe who has served for more than 15 years has resigned as Treasurer. This is a key position. With the new computer programs we are putting in place, much of this job is automated. The only qualifications are that you must have a computer and email. We will teach you the rest. You also need to be elected to the Board at the General Meeting. If we fail to have a Treasurer, we may be forced to hire someone to do this work. We would much rather see our funds used to improve SVE. Please contact Allen Wolf to volunteer. Architectural Committee If you are thinking about building on your property or making any major modification, be sure to contact Jerry Sommer to obtain a review of your plans. Such review will avoid any unnecessary delay and expense in assuring that your plans comply with SVE Restrictions and Regulations. They are available on our website or you can obtain a copy by contacting Allen Wolf or Jerry Sommer. Building restrictions will be strictly enforced. There are presently at least 6 construction projects in various stages in SVE.
Financial Status SVEPOA is in the healthiest financial position it has ever been in. As of July 31, we had cash on hand of $33,387. The growth in cash has been the result of an aggressive effort to collect delinquent dues.
Holiday Party There is talk of having a Christmas week holiday party and cookie exchange. Contact Theresa Bertolini or Karen Law to participate. SVE Looking Good Through the efforts of many people, SVE has been looking very nice. Twice this summer, we have had the shoulders cut, both using brush hogging and weed-wacking. Beautification Day was a big success in cleaning up Riverside Park. Volunteers included the Ellen and Leonard Schmidt, Jackie and Doug Galbraith, Karen and Bill Law, Allen Wolf, Jerry Sommer, and Wayne and Sharon Koppe. Thank you, Karen, for being our organizer. Slow Down, You Move to Fast, Gotta Make Your Life Last Cars travel through SVE too fast. Ok, I admit it, I drive too fast too. But, I am trying to control that urge to put the pedal to the metal. What about you? We now have a number of children who live year-around in SVE. We have a lot of people who enjoy walking on the roads. And, as we all know, there are lots of deer and other wildlife out there. Thanks to Jerry Sommer, we have new signs cautioning drivers that there are children at play. Please heed the signs. We ask you to voluntarily limit your speed to 25 mph. Drivers adhering to this limit will enjoy the scenery more. Remember, cars are not the only thing that can be recalled by its Maker.
Spring Canoe Trip The Association is planning a spring canoe trip down the Jordan River. The date has yet to be set. The canoe trip will include lunch along the river. In the evening we will have an Association dinner. For owners who do not have a residence, we will be making special arrangements. We will have facilities available to stay in SVE either in private homes or camping. We will provide restrooms and water for those wishing to tent camp. Why Do We Have An Association?Every once in a while, we hear the question, “Why do I have to pay dues? Why do we need an association? The Association is a legal entity established in the Declaration and Covenant. That document obligates the Association to exist and function beginning April 1, 1969. The Declaration and Covenant established common areas, such as the parks, which the Association is obligated to maintain. The By-laws of the Association obligate the Association to perform certain other duties as well: promote the health and welfare of the residents, supplement municipal services, pay the taxes on common areas, maintain unkempt land and trees, enforce covenants and restrictions. Each of us has an investment in our property. We all want to see that investment grow in value. The Association helps do that by enforcing the “Restrictions and Regulations” which specifies how property must be maintained and developed, by maintaining and developing common areas, by engaging in social activities and more. We encourage all owners to get involved. Help with a project. Share your ideas. Let us know you appreciate the hard work of all the people who devote their time and energy on your behalf.
